4 Things I Liked in September
If you didn't watch "Industry" to get through September, who are you? Plus, "The English Teacher," Mermaid Chunky and Spiced Apple Waterloo.
Remember “cheugy?” It was like basic, but harder to spell? I don’t go on TikTok so I have no idea what people are saying anymore, but I’ve learned some stock market terms from Industry. Um, upside much anyone? Anyway, here are some of my favorite things I discovered in September.
Industry. I thiiiink the zeitgeist has caught up with Industry, but it’s still under-watched for how good it is. If you’re the kind of person who obsessively binged White Lotus and Succession and you feel empty and hollow because they’re over, you’d probably like Industry. Just know that you won’t understand what the characters are talking about 90% of the time, but that’s Wall Street, baby. You probably won’t get it unless you did 8 kinds of drugs last night and are addicted to gambling and manufactured your own fake diploma. The characters all go through eye-boggling bouts of self-destruction, redemption, sexual humiliation and jargon-filled arguing for their own right to exist on an episode-to-episode basis.
The English Teacher and Stupid Idiots. We got instantly addicted to The English Teacher, which is a uniquely bright, offbeat and smart-mouthed sitcom about a high school. (Its stars, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Stephanie Koenig, also have a YouTube series called Stupid Idiots that is a nice little binge once you run out of episodes.) In one scene, a cheerleader says she quit the sport because she died for 3 minutes. “I went to hell!”
Mermaid Chunky. At first I thought I was listening to a long-form recording of that flute song that lured 30 raccoons out of the woods. But then I realized it was a band, and that I liked them. If you have enjoyed bands like Braids, Death by Chocolate, Grace Ives, Animal Collective or maybe even 100 Gecs, you might like Mermaid Chunky. I enjoyed this profile on them very munch. Firstly, one of their names is Moina Moin (great name), and she describes their music as “squelchy.”
Spiced Apple Waterloo. This flavor is legitimately delicious and also my husband will drink these if I put bourbon in them.
Happy October!
